The Rieger 1a Standard bassoon reed by Rimpl is a great all round reed - good in both the high and low registers. The 1a shape is very popular with reed makers.

The sound is a bit brighter than a Rieger 2 shape reed; it is narrower at the throat than the Rieger 2.

Traditional red binding.

Total length: 56.6mm; blade length: 28.0mm; blade width: 16.0mm.

See our Reed Dimensions Comparison Chart for dimensions of all our reeds.

Reed Hardness

This reed is available in standard and soft versions. The Rieger 1a Soft reed is made specially for Double Reed Ltd., and will benefit those who play less often as you will get less tired on softer reeds, and it is also good if you like to play with a looser embouchure. The sound is slightly quieter, but also easier to control.

The standard reed is for those who play regularly. It gives more projection, a bit more stability and a broader tone quality, but is slightly harder work to play on.
